Responsibilities

The incumbent is assigned as a staff dentist or dental specialist to the Dental Service and reports to the Chief, Dental Service and to Assistant Chief, Dental Service. The incumbent will function as an equal member within the larger team of staff dentists and auxiliary staff. Individuals with specialized training in a particular specialty may be assigned section chief responsibilities for that subspecialty and may function as the primary clinician or subject matter expert responsible for formulating policy, procedures, education and training affecting the daily clinical operations of the subspecialty. As a staff dentist, the incumbent will be responsible for providing consultation and treatment within the scope of their specific clinical privileges. As a staff dentist, the incumbent may provide education and training to members of the medical staff through various conferences, committees and lecture series. The incumbent may be assigned administrative or managerial responsibilities though participation in clinical, educational and administrative committees, task groups or special projects

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: * United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. * Degree of doctorof dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:.(1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence * Current, full, and unrestricted licenseto practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia. The dentist must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. * Residency: Graduates of approved United States and Canadian schools of dentistry must have a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or, for integrated programs, meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active current licensure * Proficiency in spoken and written English. * Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Dentists appointed to Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center and assigned to the Dental Service are independent licensed practitioners who hold a full and unrestricted license in any state. Dentists will be graduates of an ADA accredited dental school and where applicable, will be graduates of an accredited residency in the applicable dental specialty residency. The provider will perform only those privileges for which approval has been granted by the Medical Center Director prospectively and in writing. Privileges will be renewed semiannually or when additional/new training qualifies the dentist to perform other procedures not already approved.

A dentist provides direct patient care in a hospital setting to adults with or without acute and chronic medical conditions and serves as a consultant to other healthcare providers. The dentist is experienced in interpretation of dental radiographs and on delivery of diagnostic consultations and clinical dental treatment as outlined in their individual approved privileges. Dental staff who supervise residents will provide education, training, mentoring and supervision to students and residents He/she maintains own professional qualifications, participates in customer service training, computer training, attends mandated medical center training activities as required and provides resident supervision as directed.

Physical Requirements: Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 (http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/HRLibrary/Dir-Policy.htm . Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
