The Department of Surgery has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Manager of Special Projects position.

Jobs in this career family provide general business operations of the organization or a combination of operational responsibilities covering multiple career families. Functions include institutional research, statistical analysis, policy development and review, strategic planning and broad unit business operations such as parking and transportation services, risk management, childcare services, real estate and property management, retail services or job responsibilities that combine fiscal, HR and operational management responsibilities.

Program Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of a program, function or work unit, including the development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes. These positions typically do not supervise others.

Position Emphasis:

The Manager of Special Projects will provide project support to the Director of Operations and other executives within the Department of Surgery. The position is expected to provide strategic thought leadership to cross functional project teams, stakeholders, and senior leaders while demonstrating a keen eye for the tactical elements of projects. The position partners with the executive leadership team to identify and evaluate opportunities for efficiency and growth, through pro-active seeking out, prioritizing, and development of initiatives. This position will also work hand in hand with the Director of Operations to assess the operational support needs of the department and collaborate on the development of a business intelligence program.

Projects in the current pipeline include but are not limited to; enterprise level strategic planning/implementation, enterprise level onboarding and acculturation program for faculty and staff, revenue cycle improvement project to reduce controllable allowances, and the development of a coaching/mentorship program for both faculty and staff.

The position will provide end to end project leadership (concept to completion), fully owning the mechanisms which ensure successful project delivery using a creative, focused, and synergistic project development process to include internal stakeholders and external strategic partnerships. This position will also provide supervision to a department business intelligence analyst with opportunity to grow a robust and comprehensive team.

Essential Duties:

  • Serves as a liaison with executives and program leaders, to ensure that organizational goals are met.

  • Serves as supervisor for a business intelligence analyst.

  • Drafts schedules for implementation of long-range/short-range plans and proposals.

  • Monitors project progress, drafting and distributing periodic progress reports for leadership and stakeholders.

  • Outlines the tasks involved in the project and delegates accordingly.

  • Conducts cost analysis, estimating expected costs for the project.

  • Prepares and implements a budget based on estimates.

  • Conducts risk assessments; reports identified risks to management; provides recommendations for mitigation of risk (including termination of the project if appropriate).

  • Addresses questions, concerns, and/or complaints throughout the project.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position begins at $53,306 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ work experience with at least 1 year in a lead role demonstrating management of progressively more complex projects and initiatives.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of professional level experience in project management.

  • Experience with large-scale project management, strategic planning and/or consulting

  • Experience in healthcare

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or other related advanced degree.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong project management skills with a self-directed, results oriented aptitude.

  • Must have demonstrated analytical/problem-solving, project management/task planning

  • Responsible to ensure project plans are robust, maintained, and access is available to all necessary.

  • Organization agility, demonstrating ability to influence across levels and functions of the organization.

Additional Competencies

  • Proven leadership in project management demonstrating flexibility, creative problem solving, conflict resolution and drive for results.

  • Solves extremely complex, multi-faceted problems requiring ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness.

  • Regularly exercises independent judgment in developing new methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results for complex assignments.
