Job Title:Software Engineer I

Location:Boulder, CO

Type:Full-time, Non-exempt

Relocation:No relocation package is offered for this position.

Work Authorization:U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position. UCAR/NCAR will not sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this position.

Where You Will Work:

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and various UCAR Cooperative Programs (UCP) – all in service of advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in atmospheric and related sciences.

What You Will Do:

Software systems engineer for the UCAR Community Programs (UCP) COSMIC Group. Including support for the COSMIC Data Analysis and Archive Center (CDAAC) and tasks related to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Reflections calibration and validation.

As part of a team, design, implement, test, and maintain processing software in consultation with program scientists. Process existing and new data from satellite missions, in-situ and remote sensors, and assist in quality control and validation.

Implement, maintain, design, and modernize software configuration management, development, build, test, and operational frameworks. Design, implement, and maintain database and data storage and serving frameworks.

Perform software updates, testing, packaging and deployment across development and operational systems.

Assist in communication, negotiation, and user support with partners and sponsors.

Document system designs and software modules and maintain documentation.

Participate in processing systems operations, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:

Software system engineering for COSMIC Program systems and data center. Develops, implements, documents, and maintains software development, build, packaging, and test frameworks. Applies and maintains tools for configuration management and continuous integration to improve the reliability and deployment frequency of software to development and operational systems. Assist in Linux system and web infrastructure administration as well as hardware installation.

Support software related calibration and validation tasks in the area of GNSS Reflection (GNSS-R) remote sensing, including designing, coding and testing algorithms on the UCAR computer servers in coordination with UCAR scientist s related to calibration, validation and application development for GNSS-R data sets.

Performs CDAAC data monitoring, post-processing, archiving and data collection and distribution from one or more satellites. Participates in operations system monitoring, including weekend and off-hours monitoring duty in rotation with other CDAAC operators. Effectively interfaces with the satellite operators, data customers, and other CDAAC partners. Maintains existing and designs and implements new CDAAC web interfaces.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer-related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of software development methodologies, e.g. revision control, testing, gathering and analysis of requirements, design, prototyping, integration, and documentation.

  • Knowledge of GNSS data processing and fundamentals of satellite systems engineering.

  • Knowledge of techniques for writing secure, resilient software.

  • Experience with Python and C/C++.

  • Experience with the software version control systems such as Subversion and Git.

  • Skill in applying basic software development process to computing applications and/or programming problems.

  • Experience with at least one Linux operating system.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Ability to convey technical information to team lead or a small working group/team.
