Who We Are:
Located in Boulder, Colorado, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) serves and participates in a collaborative community of researchers and educators who are dedicated to understanding the atmosphere -- the air around us -- and the complex processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun’s core. We manage the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) on behalf of the National Science Foundation and the university community.
This position will be located in the heart of UCAR located within the Government Relations and Business Development group who work closely with the Corporate Communications team to drive outfacing strategy for the organization and to help advance the public impacts of the National Center.
What You Will Do:
The External Engagement and Strategic Integration Specialist will work with the Senior Advisor to the President to lead UCAR’s external relations to strengthen the visibility of the research, technology, capabilities, and opportunities for partnerships with UCAR, NCAR and UCP. The position will collaborate with institutional leads to ensure integrated strategies and best practices are utilized when engaging with and managing stakeholder relationships and will work to grow new relationships and resources.
External Engagement and Affairs
Leads and develops strategic engagement opportunities and partnerships to enhance UCAR’s mission and efficacy in the community.
Actively creates new and enhance existing collaborative opportunities for the organization.
Engages academia, government, and industry stakeholders on behalf of UCAR.
Develops and executes external communication strategies to ensure the organization’s activities and mission are tailored to specific audiences, deliver a unified message, and increase the visibility of the organization.
Leads outreach efforts to leverage NCAR/UCP science, research, and service programs to improve organizational accessibility to stakeholders and decision makers.
Works with the President’s Office (PO) Directors to align external engagement strategies for Communications, Government Relations, Diversity & Inclusion, and Business Development efforts.
Develops a UCAR external outreach strategic plan for academic, government, private, and nonprofit institutions and track and prioritize trends and drive the organization to engage and identify organizational leads, when appropriate.
Serves as a liaison and build relationships with related communities, coalitions, and stakeholders to continue and create new collaborations relevant to Earth system sciences.
Leads and facilitates integration of intra-organizational partnerships related to external affairs, in support of government relations, business development, annual meeting/trade show participation, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Serves as a liaison for horizontal integration across all UCAR President’s office functions using a matrix approach.
Assists in identification and amelioration of potential cross-divisional conflicts and contribute to a collaborative team-focused culture in the PO.
Supports the PO efforts to increase collaboration between UCAR/NCAR/UCP.
Works to ensure that external engagement functions articulate a clear vision for UCAR and emphasize the importance of the organization being transparent, forthright, inclusive, innovative, and diverse.
What You Need:
Education and Years of Experience:
- Master’s Degree in Science Communication, Public Relations, or similar discipline and 4-6 years of experience in science communication and/or science program management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expert knowledge of science communication techniques when applied to public outreach and internal engagement activities.
Advanced skill working collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders from the public and private sector.
Ability to identify and understand stakeholder needs and to develop strategies to address those needs effectively at an organizational level.
Proven ability to communicate priorities to a wide variety of stakeholders, both internal and external, in a clear and effective fashion.
Proven ability to work effectively with a divers staff to accomplish goals
Strong interpersonal skill, ability to form and motivate a team, and a track record of successful team leadership.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Direct experience in related scientific areas in government, non-profit and/or FFRDC.
