Discover the key processes in each component of the Earth's climatesystem and the interactions among them;2. Represent this understanding in models and thereby provide a basis forprediction of climate; and3. Apply this understanding and these models to scientific problems ofsocietal relevance.What You Will Do:The Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory of the National Center forAtmospheric Research seeks a motivated post-doctoral researcher to work withBrian Medeiros and Andrew Gettelman to better constrain and understand climatesensitivity and cloud feedbacks. The project focuses on analysis of boundarylayer dynamics and cloud physics across CMIP6 models. Physics-based conceptualmodels will be employed as diagnostic tools to understand, evaluate, andcompare atmospheric boundary layer dynamics and cloud microphysics. Areas ofparticular interest include entrainment, boundary layer decoupling, andaerosol-cloud interactions. This will be a highly collaborative projectbetween the incumbent and the principal investigators. The successfulapplicant is expected to contribute significantly to the design anddevelopment of the project, including developing and contributing code tocommunity diagnostic efforts, presenting results at scientific meetings,and preparing peer-reviewed publications.Responsibilities:Designs and implements conceptual models as compact software modules designedfor use with data from CMIP6 archive. Applies these models to CMIP6experiments to diagnose boundary layer dynamical characteristics. Usesavailable observational and reanalysis data to evaluate CMIP6 model boundarylayers. Acquires model and observational data from online archives asnecessary; manages large datasets; develops diagnostic code under standardversion control systems, and shares code with broader community (forexample by contributing to community packages).Adapts published diagnostics of aerosol-cloud interaction and microphysicalprocesses for use with CMIP6 models. Assesses a set of potential diagnosticsto discern which provide the strongest constraints on climate model behavior.Applies diagnostics to CMIP6 models to evaluate aerosol-cloud-interactions.Develops diagnostic code under standard version control systems, and sharescode with broader community (for example by contributing to communitypackages)Applies boundary layer dynamics and aerosol-cloud interaction diagnostics toclimate change experiments from CMIP6. Quantifies relationships betweendiagnostics and common metrics of climate change.Presents results at relevant scientific meetings, leads and participates inwriting scientific journal articles that document findings of the project,and contributes to formal reports related to the project.Interacts with the project PIs regularly for coordinated / joint analysis.Interacts and collaborates with AMP scientists on boundary layer and cloudprocesses. Collaborates with NOAA MAPP Task force partners to coordinateshared diagnostic code.What You Need:Education and Years of ExperienceA Ph.D. or equivalent experience in atmospheric/climate sciences or similardiscipline; demonstrated understanding of climate science; researchexperience in a relevant field, with contributions to refereed journals.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExpertise in cloud physics, boundary layer meteorology, and/oratmospheric dynamics.Stro
