This position is open to Colorado residents and non-resident applicants.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is seeking an Intern to work the Hydraulics Unit in Greeley, CO. The anticipated start date is late May. The position will work 35 – 40 hours per week through the summer. There may be the possibility of the Internship continuing in the fall on a part-time basis for up to a maximum of nine months.

Description of Job

CDOT is seeking a motivated and responsible college student or recent graduate pursuing a career in hydraulics. Our intern will gain experience in duties including hydraulic design and river and drainage field work.

Responsibilities will include:

Hydrologic & Hydraulic Design:

  • provide technical assistance to the Hydraulics Unit in preparing hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, designs and reports for in-house projects

  • utilizes MicroStation/OpenRoads, ArcGIS, SMS, WMS,HEC-RAS, FHWA Toolbox and various spreadsheets for design and analysis

River & Drainage Field Work:

  • provide field support to the Hydraulics Unit with site reconnaissance, drainage complaint resolution

  • Maintenance support, and meeting attendance

Office Support:

  • support office and field staff by assisting with reporting, copying, scanning and use of CDOT equipment and resources for archiving, printing and

  • distribution purposes.

Work Environment:

  • Required to drive CDOT vehicle to field locations

  • All outdoor activities will require use of appropriate personal protective equipment (provided by CDOT)

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Any undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelor's, Masters or Ph.D degree in hydraulic engineering, geomorphology, environmental engineering, hydrology or a closely related field. A copy of your transcript must be submitted with your application. See NOTE below.


  • A recent college graduate. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D degree in hydraulic engineering, geomorphology, environmental engineering, hydrology or a closely related degree within three calendar years. A copy of your transcript must be submitted with your application. See NOTE below.


  • A certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services Program
